TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR AN ENDOWED FUND 

NAME OF ENDOWMENT FUND

UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA CARDIOLOGY RESEARCH ENDOWMENT FUND FOR FELLOWSHIPS AND GRADUATE AWARDS  AT THE HEART INSTITUTE

INTRODUCTION

This fund was established in April 2008 through the partnership between the University of Ottawa and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation in order to maximize the benefits of an anonymous gift to the Faculty of Medicine for cardiac research. 

PURPOSE OF FUND

The purpose of the fund is to support and encourage cardiac research by providing fellowships and awards to graduate students registered at the Faculty of Medicine who are engaged in cardiac research at the Heart Institute.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must be:

  1. registered full-time as a graduate student at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa OR be registered as a postdoctoral fellow with the Faculty of Medicine through the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS);
  2. a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a person with the protected/refugee status or an international trainee; and
  3. engaged in cardiac research at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Subject to the annual availability of funds from the endowment

  • Value of the Fellowships: Minimum of $40,000 each
  • Number of Fellowships: A maximum of one fellowship will be funded dependent on the quality of the applications
  • Frequency of the Fellowships: Annual – see note below regarding renewability
  • Level of the Fellowships: Postdoctoral
  • Value of the Graduate Student Awards: Minimum of $15,000 each /per year for M.Sc. level
  • Minimum of $20,000 each/per year for PhD. level
  • Number of Awards: A maximum of three graduate awards will be funded dependent on the quality of the applications
  • Frequency of the Awards: Annual - see note below regarding renewability
  • Level of the Awards: Graduate
  • Renewable: Once, dependent on maintaining University of Ottawa Eligibility Criteria, funds availability, and production of a satisfactory progress report by April 1 for the first year.

  • APPLICATION PROCEDURE – GRADUATE STUDENTS
    • In the case of graduate students, applications must be made through Online Scholarships and Bursaries, which can be accessed through the uoZone portal, and should include:
  1. the Curriculum Vitae on Online Scholarships and Bursaries;
  2. a summary of career aspirations/intentions and proposal for achieving them (1 page);
  3. a letter from the supervisor (1 page) to include: a) recommendation of the candidate; and b) grant funding and resources available to support the proposed project; the supervisor’s mentorship and supervisory experience; a training plan for the applicant; and
  4. a summary of the research conducted by the applicant (2 pages).
  • APPLICATION PROCEDURE – POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS
    • In the case of postdoctoral fellows, applications must be made to the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office, Faculty of Medicine, and include:
  1. a curriculum vitae;
  2. a summary of career aspirations/intentions and proposal for achieving them (1 page);
