D.M. HOGARTH BURSARY
This fund was created in honour of Donald Macdonald Hogarth.
Donald MacDonald Hogarth (June 15, 1878 – June 27, 1950) led a full and varied life. He began his professional career in the world of politics, representing the riding of Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) in the Ontario Legislature for five terms, from 1908-1930. He then enlisted in the Canadian military as a private and saw action in France with the 27th Battalion of the First Canadian Expeditionary Force. For two years he was Canadian Quartermaster General, and retired in October, 1919 as Major General, DSO, CMG. During his time overseas, Hogarth met Margaret Paterson of Winnipeg, at that time an ambulance driver in France, and they were married in England in 1917.
Upon his discharge, Hogarth returned to his chief business activities: mine development and mining promotion. His crowning achievement was the Steep Rock iron mine in northwestern Ontario, which involved diverting a river, draining three lakes, removal of up to 100 meters of clay over the ore bodies, and personally negotiating multi-million dollar loans with the Canadian and American governments. Hogarth was also involved in creation of gold, silver, base metals and uranium mines in Canada.
Donald MacDonald Hogarth was inducted posthumously into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 1996. His favourite relaxation was total immersion in Canadian biographies and narratives of Canadian exploration. His library shelves were stocked to explosion with books of North American and European history.
PURPOSE OF FUND
Provide financial assistance to students in their 2nd or 3rd or 4th year of the Honours B.Sc. with specialization in Geology in the Faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa who demonstrate financial need.
The applicant must:
1. be registered as a full-time student in the 2nd or 3rd or 4th year of the Honours B.Sc. with specialization in Geology program at the Faculty of Science of the University of Ottawa; and
2. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Award Service at the University of Ottawa.
