David Staines Scholarship
This fund was established in 1998 by David Staines. Former Chair of the Department of English during 1990-93, Dr. Staines was appointed Vice-Dean of Arts in 1994, acting Dean the following year and confirmed as Dean in the Fall of 1996. Academic, author, editor and literary critic, he is widely known and highly respected in Canadian literary circles. A founding member of the jury of the Giller Prize, awarded annually to the best work of Canadian fiction, he is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Giller Foundation and the General Editor since 1988 of the New Canadian Library published by McClelland and Stewart Inc. The donor thanks the Alumni Association of the University of Ottawa and the Government of Ontario for their matching contributions.
PURPOSE OF FUND
To provide financial assistance to undergraduate students registered in the Department of English of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ottawa and whose education would otherwise be compromised.
The applicant must:
1. be registered full-time or part-time in an undergraduate program at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, University of Ottawa;
2. be an Ontario resident, as per OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) rules; and
3. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Service of the University of Ottawa.
