French Studies Bursary

PURPOSE OF FUND

The objective of this fund is to provide financial assistance to a newly admitted student who is undertaking the university studies for the first time by encouraging studies in French, in French Immersion or in extended French.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or have protected person or refugee status;

  2. fulfill the admission requirements of the faculty in question (Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Telfer School of Management or the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section);

  3. be registered full time*(1), and for the first time, in an undergraduate program in a direct-entry faculty or in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section;

  4. Each term take at least:

  • 9 credits(2) (i.e., 3 courses) taught in French,(3) or

  • 6 credits(2) (i.e., 2 courses) taught in French,(3) or in French as a second language (FLS) if you are in French immersion or in extended French

NOTE: CO-OP students receive their installment only when they are enrolled in a study term.

RENEWAL CRITERIA

This scholarship can be renewed for three years following your first year of study provided that you meet certain renewal criteria.

As you began your first year of studies in September 2014 or later, you must:

• Remain registered full-time*(1) in a direct-entry faculty or in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section

• Each term take at least:

  • 9 credits(2) (i.e., 3 courses) taught in French,(3) or

  • 6 credits(2) (i.e., 2 courses) taught in French,(3) or in French as a second language (FLS) if you are in French immersion or in extended French

• Have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 5.5 or higher at the end of each academic year.(4)

As you began your first year of studies in winter 2014 or earlier, you must:

• Maintain full-time registration*(1) in a direct-entry faculty or in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section

• Each term take at least:

  • 9 credits(2) (i.e. 3 courses) taught in French(3) or

  • 6 credits(2) (i.e. 2 courses) taught in French,(3) or in French as a second language (FLS) if you are in French immersion or in extended French

• Be receiving government financial aid* issued through your province or territory (such as OSAP, AFE, etc.) for each renewal year, if you lived in the Ottawa/Gatineau** region at the time you were admitted.

* The 30% off Ontario Tuition Grant (OTG) is not considered government financial aid for the purpose of this bursary.

** The geographic boundary of the Ottawa-Gatineau region for the purpose of scholarship renewal includes all postal codes beginning with the following three letters: J8L, J8M, J8P, J8R, J8T, J8V, J8X, J8Y, J8Z, J9A, J9H, J9J, K1B, K1C, K1E, K1G, K1H, K1J, K1K, K1L, K1M, K1N, K1P, K1R, K1S, K1T, K1V, K1W, K1X, K1Y, K1Z, K2A, K2B, K2C, K2E, K2G, K2H, K2J, K2K, K2L, K2M, K2P, K2R, K2S, K2T, K2V, K4A, K4C, K4M and K4P.

(1) Temporary interruption of your studies or registering part time or as a special student will lead to your scholarship being revoked for the rest of your studies.

(2) Some exceptions may apply to students participating in an international exchange or in a program where they cannot take the required number of credits in French.

(3) Only the course codes whose second digit is 5, 6, 7 or 8 (e.g. ADM1700) are used in calculating the number of credits taught in French.

(4) If your CGPA is below 5.5 at the end of an academic year, your scholarship will not be renewed. However, if your CGPA meets or exceeds the 5.5 minimum at the end of the following academic year, you can receive the full amount of the award again. This does not apply to students who started their first year of studies in winter 2014 or earlier.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

There is no application for this award. This bursary is awarded automatically to students who enroll in a French program, in French Immersion Studies or in the Extended French Stream. This bursary can be combined with any admission scholarship or bursary except for the Education Bursary.
