NAME OF ENDOWED FUND
Pierre Savard Memorial Scholarship
INTRODUCTION
This fund was created by the Department of History to honour the memory of Professor Pierre Savard who died October 4, 1998. Professor Savard devoted his distinguished career to studying aspects of French-Canadian history and culture. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, President of the International Council for Canadian Studies, Director for the Centre of Research on French-Canadian Civilization, President of the Canadian Historical Association, and he was posthumously made a Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Pléiade. Professor Savard was deeply committed to education, instilling in generations of students his enthusiasm, first at Laval University where he taught for 11 years, then at the University of Ottawa from 1972 on. With his endless curiosity, his encyclopaedic knowledge and his ability to bring out what was really important, he trained many budding historians and taught them to pursue excellence. Those who worked with him in the Department of History, of which he was director from 1985 to 1988, can testify to his outstanding service to his students.
